James was born in 1845 in Broughton (Salford).1  James' father was Robert (Thomas) Mather and his mother was Mary Ann Walmsley.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Ann Worsley. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, John, Robert, George, Edwin, Julia, Maria and Harriet.  He was the third youngest of the nine children.
