Maria's father was Robert (Thomas) Mather and her mother was Mary Ann Walmsley.  Her paternal grandparents were John Mather and Ann Worsley. She had six brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, John, Robert, James, George, Edwin, Julia and Harriet.  She was the third oldest of the nine children.  She died about 1833.
