Thomas was born in 1828 in Salford and his baptism took place on July 20th, 1828 in Manchester.1 2  Thomas' father was Robert (Thomas) Mather and his mother was Mary Ann Walmsley.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Ann Worsley. He had five brothers and three sisters, named John, Robert, James, George, Edwin, Julia, Maria and Harriet.  He was the oldest of the nine children.
