Thomas' father was John Mather and his mother was Elizabeth Coop. His paternal grandparents were William Mather and Elizabeth (Betty) Farrand. He had two brothers and three sisters, named James, George, Alice, Mary and Ellen. He was the oldest of the six children. He died at the age of 50 in September 1903 in Bolton. His burial was on September 26th, 1903 at Tonge-with-Haulgh Cemetery.²³
