James was born in March 1861 in Bolton.1  James' father was John Mather and his mother was Elizabeth Coop.  His paternal grandparents were William Mather and Elizabeth (Betty) Farrand. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, George, Alice, Mary and Ellen.  He was the second youngest of the six children.
