Ivy was born in September 1895 in Bolton.1  Ivy's father was Richard Mather and her mother was Jane Edge.  Her paternal grandparents were James Mather and Ann Riley. She had six brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, Robert, Richard, Mark, Joseph, John, Mary, Sarah, Jane, Alice and Ellen.  She was the youngest of the twelve children.
