John was born in December 1892 in Bolton.1  John's father was Richard Mather and his mother was Jane Edge.  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Ann Riley. He had five brothers and six sisters, named Thomas, Robert, Richard, Mark, Joseph, Mary, Sarah, Jane, Alice, Ellen and Ivy.  He was the second youngest of the twelve children.
