Thomas was born in 1873 at Bolton Emmanuel and his baptism took place on August 17th, 1873 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1  Thomas' father was Richard Mather and his mother was Jane Edge.  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Ann Riley. He had five brothers and six sisters, named Robert, Richard, Mark, Joseph, John, Mary, Sarah, Jane, Alice, Ellen and Ivy.  He was the oldest of the twelve children.
