Robert was born in March 1876 at Bolton Emmanuel.1  Robert's father was Richard Mather and his mother was Jane Edge.  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Ann Riley. He had five brothers and six sisters, named Thomas, Richard, Mark, Joseph, John, Mary, Sarah, Jane, Alice, Ellen and Ivy.  He was the third oldest of the twelve children.
