Alice was born in December 1881 in Bolton.1  Alice's father was Richard Mather and her mother was Jane Edge.  Her paternal grandparents were James Mather and Ann Riley. She had six brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, Robert, Richard, Mark, Joseph, John, Mary, Sarah, Jane, Ellen and Ivy.  She was the sixth oldest of the twelve children.
