Ellen was born in June 1885 in Bolton.1  Ellen's father was Richard Mather and her mother was Jane Edge.  Her paternal grandparents were James Mather and Ann Riley. She had six brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, Robert, Richard, Mark, Joseph, John, Mary, Sarah, Jane, Alice and Ivy.  She was the sixth youngest of the twelve children.
