Mary was born in December 1874 at Bolton Emmanuel.1  Mary's father was Richard Mather and her mother was Jane Edge.  Her paternal grandparents were James Mather and Ann Riley. She had six brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, Robert, Richard, Mark, Joseph, John, Sarah, Jane, Alice, Ellen and Ivy.  She was the second oldest of the twelve children.
