Sarah's father was John Entwistle and her mother was Eliza Jane Mather. Her maternal grandparents were Wright Mather and Sarah Powell. She had a brother and four sisters, named John, Elizabeth, Mary, Eliza and Emily. She was the oldest of the six children.
