Mary was born in September 1841 in Chorley.1  Mary's father was Robert Mather and her mother was Mary Cunliffe. She had six brothers and three sisters, named James, Richard, John, Thomas, William, Robert, Ann, Esther and Sarah.  She was the third youngest of the ten children.
