Thomas was born in 1837 in Chorley.1  Thomas' father was Robert Mather and his mother was Mary Cunliffe. He had five brothers and four sisters, named James, Richard, John, William, Robert, Ann, Esther, Mary and Sarah.  He was the fifth youngest of the ten children.
