Esther was born in 1835 in Chorley.1  Esther's father was Robert Mather and her mother was Mary Cunliffe. She had six brothers and three sisters, named James, Richard, John, Thomas, William, Robert, Ann, Mary and Sarah.  She was the fifth oldest of the ten children.
