William was born in March 1839 in Chorley.1  William's father was Robert Mather and his mother was Mary Cunliffe. He had five brothers and four sisters, named James, Richard, John, Thomas, Robert, Ann, Esther, Mary and Sarah.  He was the fourth youngest of the ten children.
