Richard was born in 1831 in Hoghton.1  Richard's father was Robert Mather and his mother was Mary Cunliffe. He had five brothers and four sisters, named James, John, Thomas, William, Robert, Ann, Esther, Mary and Sarah.  He was the third oldest of the ten children.
