Sarah was born in April 1849 in Chorley and her baptism took place on April 29th, 1849 at St. Laurence (Chorley).1 2  Sarah's father was Robert Mather and her mother was Mary Cunliffe. She had six brothers and three sisters, named James, Richard, John, Thomas, William, Robert, Ann, Esther and Mary.  She was the youngest of the ten children.
