John was born in November 1832 in Chorley.1  John's father was Robert Mather and his mother was Mary Cunliffe. He had five brothers and four sisters, named James, Richard, Thomas, William, Robert, Ann, Esther, Mary and Sarah.  He was the fourth oldest of the ten children.
