Mary was born in December 1854 in Bolton.1  Mary's father was James Mather and her mother was Ann Riley.  Her paternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Mary Cunliffe. She had three brothers and four sisters, named Robert, Richard, Thomas, Susannah, Mary, Sarah and Jane.  She was the fourth oldest of the eight children.
