Susannah was born in 1846 in Chorley and her baptism took place on November 24th, 1846 at St. Laurence (Chorley).1 2  Susannah's father was James Mather and her mother was Ann Riley.  Her paternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Mary Cunliffe. She had three brothers and four sisters, named Robert, Richard, Thomas, Mary, Mary, Sarah and Jane.  She was the oldest of the eight children.
