Sarah was born in September 1859 in Chorley.1  Sarah's father was James Mather and her mother was Ann Riley.  Her paternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Mary Cunliffe. She had three brothers and four sisters, named Robert, Richard, Thomas, Susannah, Mary, Mary and Jane.  She was the third youngest of the eight children.
