Luke was born on September 21st, 1814 in Preston.1  Luke's father was Luke Mather and his mother was Sarah.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Hannah Platt. He had three brothers and a sister, named Jacob, Thomas, Joseph and Mary.  He was the second oldest of the five children.
