Joseph was born on June 9th, 1819 in Preston.1  Joseph's father was Luke Mather and his mother was Sarah.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Hannah Platt. He had three brothers and a sister, named Jacob, Luke, Thomas and Mary.  He was the second youngest of the five children.
