Mary was born in 1837 in Bolton and her baptism took place on July 30th, 1837 at St. Mary (Deane).1 2  Mary's father was William Hilton and her mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were James Mather and Mary (Nancy) Stott. She had six sisters named Sarah, Esther, Elizabeth, Hannah, Martha and Charlotte.  She was the second oldest of the seven children.
