Joseph was born in 1866 in Bolton.1  Joseph's father was James Mather and his mother was Nancy Pomfret Cooper.  His paternal grandparents were Joseph Mather and Mary Gullan. He had three sisters named Mary, Hannah and Hannah.  He was the third oldest of the four children.
