Mary was born in 1861 in Wigan.1  Mary's father was James Mather and her mother was Nancy Pomfret Cooper.  Her paternal grandparents were Joseph Mather and Mary Gullan. She had a brother and two sisters, named Joseph, Hannah and Hannah.  She was the oldest of the four children.

‌Mary and Thomas were married in a religious ceremony on March 18th, 1883 in Farnworth witnessed by Edward Goold & Maria Howarth.2   The family line is yet to be completed.
