Sarah's father was Robert Chadwick and her mother was Betty (Elizabeth) Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were John Mather and Betty Edge. She had two brothers and four sisters, named Henry, Robert, Margaret, Mary, Sarah and Elizabeth.  She was the third youngest of the seven children.
