Herbert was born in 1886 in Bolton.¹ Herbert's father was James Knowles and his mother was Jane Mather. His maternal grandparents were William Mather and Esther Dewhurst. He had three brothers and three sisters, named William, James, Fred, Esther, Sarah and Ellen. He was the second youngest of the seven children.
