James was born in 1882 in Bolton.¹ James' father was James Knowles and his mother was Jane Mather. His maternal grandparents were William Mather and Esther Dewhurst. He had three brothers and three sisters, named William, Herbert, Fred, Esther, Sarah and Ellen. He was the third youngest of the seven children.
