Martha was born on November 10th, 1817 in Hopwood and her baptism took place on December 28th, 1817 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Prestwich).1  Martha's father was John Allen and her mother was Mary Mather. She had four brothers named Richard, David, Walker and Arthur.  She was the second oldest of the five known children.

‌Martha and Thomas were married in a religious ceremony on February 23rd, 1840 at St. Mary (Radcliffe) witnessed by Joseph Greenhalgh.2
