Arthur was born in 1826 in Heywood and his baptism took place on December 11th, 1825 at St. Leonard (Middleton).1 2  Arthur's father was John Allen and his mother was Mary Mather. He had three brothers and a sister, named Richard, David, Walker and Martha.  He was the youngest of the five known children.
