David was born in 1820 in Heywood and his baptism took place on October 22nd, 1820 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Prestwich).1 2  David's father was John Allen and his mother was Mary Mather. He had three brothers and a sister, named Richard, Walker, Arthur and Martha.  He was the third oldest of the five known children.
