James was born about 1766 in Tonge-with-Haulgh.  James' father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Christian Haslam. He had three brothers named Anne, John and Thomas. He had three half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Luke, Peter, James, Betty and Ruth.  He died in 1766 in Bolton.  He was buried on March 30th, 1766 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1
