James was born in 1794 in Bolton and his baptism took place on July 30th, 1794 at Walmsley Presbyterian.1  James' father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Hannah Platt. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Luke, Peter, Betty and Ruth. He had four half-brothers named Anne, James, John and Thomas.  He died at the age of 1 in November 1795 in Bolton.  He was buried on November 11th, 1795 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1
