William was born in September 1844 in Bolton.1  William's father was William Mather and his mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Farrand.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Betty Edge. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, John, James, Wright, Wright, Susannah, Ellen and Elizabeth.  He was the second youngest of the nine children.
