Elizabeth's father was William Mather and her mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Farrand. Her paternal grandparents were John Mather and Betty Edge. She had six brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, John, James, Wright, Wright, William, Susannah and Ellen. She was the youngest of the nine children.
