James' father was John Gregory and his mother was Margaret Barker. He had a brother and a sister, named Samuel and Mary.  He was the second oldest of the three children. He had three half-brothers and four half-sisters, named Richard, John, Isaac, Elizabeth, Agnes, Nancy and Margaret.
