Marion was born in March 1934 in Barton upon Irwell.1  Marion's father was Edmund Mather and her mother was Eveline Barnes.  Her paternal grandparents were James Mather and Mary Ann Johnson. She had a brother and a sister, named Ian and Mary.  She was the second oldest of the three children.
