Sarah was born in 1794 in Little Hulton and her baptism took place on November 2nd, 1794 at St. Mary (Deane).¹

Sarah's father was John Mather and her mother was Alice Mort. Her paternal grandparents were John Mather and Ann Eckersley. She had two brothers and two sisters, named William, George, Jane and Mary.
