Samuel was born in November 1756 in Halliwell and his baptism took place on November 25th, 1756 at St. Mary (Deane). Samuel's father was John Thornley and his mother was Alice Boardman. He had a brother and two sisters, named John, Betty and Alice.  He was the oldest of the four children.
