John was born in August 1768 in Halliwell and his baptism took place on August 14th, 1768 at St. Mary (Deane).1  John's father was John Thornley and his mother was Alice Boardman. He had a brother and two sisters, named Samuel, Betty and Alice.  He was the youngest of the four children.
