Ann was born in December 1856 in Liverpool.1  Ann's father was Thomas Mather and her mother was Margaret Jones.  Her paternal grandparents were James Mather and Jane Patterson. She had a brother and two sisters, named George, Ann and Jane.  She was the second youngest of the four children.
