Martha was born in 1825 in Wigan and her baptism took place there on May 16th, 1825.1 2  Martha's father was James Topping and her mother was Alice Atherton. She had a brother and three sisters, named William, Ann, Jane and Elizabeth. She had an adopted sister named Alice. She had a half-brother named William.
