This John travelled to the US with his sister-in-law Ellen on 1 Mar 1841 sailing on the Stephen Whitney.  They reached New York on 20 April, a crossing of a little over 7 weeks.  He must have come back on a steamship (but not the President as that was lost March 1841) as he was home in time for the 1841 census on 6 June.  The Siddons departed NY of 25 April 1841, and arrive at Liverpool 17 or 18 May.  That could be how he got back!

In 1841, John was at Dandy Row, Sharples (Astley Bridge) with his father.

John emigrated to Maryland, USA.  In 1858, two years after his brother William had died he married William's widow Ellen.

On 28 Nov 1873, Samuel & Eliza (30 & 28) arrived at NY from Liverpool on the Abyssinia. With them were Samuel, John & Mary (7, 6 & 4).  This must be another family as childrens names dont match up!

In 1880 Samuel (a labourer) and Elizabeth (35 & 33) had Elenorer (8), John W (5) and Ida May (1) at Hampden, Baltimore, Maryland.

In 1880, Nathan and Emma (38 & 28) were at the Cross Keys, Baltimore with John (8), Mollie (6), William (4), Warner (3) and Nathan (3mo).  Nathan was a moulder. 1853 - 1925 William Gibson Mather 72 72 It is probable William Gibson Mather also lived on the Falls Road, at or near the Cross Keys Tavern.  His son Charles G Mather held the funeral of his wife Lula May (aged 25) there in Jan 1919.

After their step-father John died, Samuel (24), Nathan (22) and William (16) in 1870 were living with George Washington, a Hotel Keeper from England. George was Ellen's third husband.

In 1937 Mary F (Widow of William G) is listed at 3609 Falls Road, and William J Mather is listed at 3709 Falls Road. ~1735 Nathan Mather ~1735 Ellen Cowley 1765 Martha Mather 1756 Martha Mather 1833 - 1834 Catherine Mather 11m 11m Catherine Mather died in Belmont 1836 - 1837 Robert Mather 1 1 1840 - ~1842 Hannah Mather 2 2 Hannah sailed to New York on the Stephen Whitney with uncle John Mather and her Mother Ellen in 1841. She died the following year. 1808 - 1856 William Mather 47 47 1 Oct 1832, William Mather married Ellen Conlive at Bolton.  William's brother Robert was witness.

William Mather (1807-1856) settled in Baltimore County, Maryland and went to work in a cotton mill. 

William and Ellen had a few children in the 1830's but they may have died.  On 29 June 1840, William (recorded as aged 30) sailed to America on the Orpheus, temporarily leaving Ellen at home, pregnant with their daughter, Hannah.  Ten months later, Ellen, Hannah and John Mather (William's brother) embarked for America to join William.  The baby, Hannah died shortly after arrival in America.  John may have returned to the UK once Ellen and the baby disembarked in New York.

On the 13 Feb 1833 William Mather of Baltimore, Maryland signed a declaration to become a citizen of the USA

In 1850 (US census), Wlliam (42) was an Inn Keeper in Baltimore with Ellen (38), Samuel (5), Nathanial (3), and his father Richard (73) from England. 1852 - 1938 Mary Emma Biscoe 85 85 Known as Emma Biscoe (before marriage) 1871 - 1951 John (Elzey) Ellsworth Mather 79 79 1873 - 1953 Mary (Mollie) Emma Mather 79 79 1875 - 1931 William Nathaniel Mather 56 56 In the 1899 directory, William C was a Labourer at Cross Keys.  Is this him (as John E and Nathan C also listed at Cross Keys)?

In 1937 Mary F (Widow of William G) is listed at 3609 Falls Road, and William J Mather is listed at 3709 Falls Road. 1847 - 1924 Elizabeth Cooper 77 77 Elizabeth arrived 1848 and/or 1850 from England, presumably with her family as she was only a child and didnt marry for another 16 years.

In 1870, Samuel and Elizabeth Mather (25 & 23) are in Baltimore with son David N Mather. The 1900 US census shows that Stella was Samuel's  grandaughter, born Aug 1897 (aged 2).  Later (1910) Stella Johnson is shown as a foster daughter (aged 12).
