George was born on August 20th, 1876 in Salford and his baptism took place on August 25th, 1877 at St. Thomas (Pendleton).1 2  George's father was George Mather and his mother was Jane Stewart.  His paternal grandparents were Henry Mather and Mary Howarth. He had three sisters named Mary, Elizabeth and Louisa. He had an adopted brother named Mary.  He died at the age of 17 in 1893.
