Mary was born in June 1869 in Bolton and her baptism took place on December 25th, 1870 at St. Thomas (Pendleton).1 2  Mary's father was George Mather and her mother was Jane Stewart.  Her paternal grandparents were Henry Mather and Mary Howarth. She had a brother and two sisters, named George, Elizabeth and Louisa. She had an adopted brother named Mary.
