Joseph was born on March 15th, 1840 in Pendleton and his baptism took place on April 17th, 1840 at Brunswick Methodist (Salford).1 2  Joseph's father was William Tattersall and his mother was Ann (NZ) Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Alice Owen. He had six brothers and a sister, named William, Lawrence, Ralph, Lawrence, Lawrence, James and Elizabeth.  He was the second youngest of the eight known children.  He died at the age of 27 on October 12th, 1867 in New Zealand.3
