William was born on June 1st, 1830 in Pendleton and his baptism took place on September 10th, 1830 at Brunswick Methodist (Salford).1  William's father was William Tattersall and his mother was Ann (NZ) Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Alice Owen. He had six brothers and a sister, named Lawrence, Ralph, Lawrence, Lawrence, James, Joseph and Elizabeth.  He was the oldest of the eight known children.  He died at the age of 67 on November 9th, 1897.
